I read through dozens of poems each season, trying to find the right fit for the card. I liked โA Prayer in Springโ by Robert Frost right away, but then moved it to the bottom of the list. My concern was that the imagery fit more with the bright nature-filled island depicted in the movie, not so much with my vision of the dingy alley in which the heathen cats reside in the illustration I created.
It took a while but I came back around to โA Prayer in Spring.โ The duality of the nature imagery (โthe uncertain harvestโ or the ghostly orchard at night versus all the simplicity and pleasures to be found) along with the specific mention of the โharvestโ and the โorchardโ not so subtly bring to mind The Wicker Man (1973). Also, several mentions of bees made me think of a particular remake (2006). And, finally, the religious imagery reminded me of poor doomed Sergeant Howie and the conflicting beliefs which set up the tension in the original film so effectively.
